Akomanga Kiahanga

Malo e lelei and greetings to you all! Welcome to my blog! My name is Grace and I am 13 years old.

I have had the opportunity to be a part of Akomanga Kaihanga. If you are wondering, Akomanaga Kaihanga means “ The Creative Class”. Previously, for the past few weeks we have been working on our projects. We’ve been going out to the community and getting their feedback and putting the ideas into action. In our team we have Makayla, Tiana,  Siaosi, Leiite and Kurtas. Our group is called The poly’s. We came up with the name last minute so we just went with it. It did take a while to come up with our project, but then we finally came to an agreement and we decided to do a Sports Event.

The issue that we were trying to raise awareness of is to get youth off the streets. The reason why we chose to do this is that we realise that children around our age are mainly  out on the streets and where it is too dangerous. So our group decided to create a project where our youth have the chance to collaborate with the community and to build stronger bonds with others. We've come up with a  plan to host Touch Tournaments held at the Pt England reserve and at Tamaki College. There would be teams divided into School grads and family Grades. There would be Yr 5&6, yr 7& 8 and college into family grade.

We are hoping that by doing this event we are able to bring our community together and build stronger connections with each other. At the moment I am excited but at the same time a bit worried because at this time the Covid 19 has been affecting most events happening and hopefully our event does not get cancelled.
